One Nation Under........Bush?

I wasn't going to talk about this topic, but I said to myself, "I'm going to let the world wide web know how I feel because that's what I started this blog for. Shit, no it's not. I started this because my friend Fyrchk told me I was funny. I lub her for inflating my ego, even if she is full of shit." Anyhow, I decided to share my opinion, but first I wanted to share a related story.

When I was in fourth grade there was a boy in my class named Gerald. Gerald never stood up in the mornings during our recital of the Pledge due to religious differences. Although most of us probably didn't understand what the hell (no pun intended) his religious differences had to do with the Pledge of Allegiance, we didn't care and honestly didn't want to be bothered with having to say it either. Not because we didn't believe in god, or hated our country, but at that age it's more of a 30 second, repetitious, nuisance.

Having said that, I cannot understand why the children who do have any "religious differences" can't just sit down for 30 seconds and not recite the Pledge? If they do have respect for this country, why can't they just not say "under God" when that portion is supposed to be said but say the rest? Why can't that child just change it to who ever it is they worship, "under Allah" or "under Budda" or "under Brad Pitt" well you get the point. Who cares if the whole class believes in something or someone different and during that part of the pledge each kid is saying something different?

Honestly, what pisses me off more is all of the time and effort being put into the 30 second recital of the Pledge of Allegiance that could be put into improving the actual education in our schools. The public education system in this country doesn't seem to be getting any better. I don't know about your neck of the woods but the D.C. schools are HORRIBLE. The classrooms are literally falling apart. Kids had to leave early this past spring because of no air conditioning. Yet somehow there's enough funding for metal detectors.

Who cares that aside from third world countries, the U.S. has one of the poorest education systems in the world, and our children are doing drugs, having babies, contracting STD's, joining gangs, committing violent crimes and murdering each other? At least their first amendment rights are being protected, which means they don't have to recite the Pledge of Allegiance because of two little words.

Thank GOD for the justice system.

Can I be under Johnny Depp since she took Brad Pitt already?

If I'm under Angelina Jolie, I'll be under her with you, April, 'k?

The schools here suck too, but I doubt that they'd ever debate such an issue in the deep south. They might debate whether or not to teach evolution, but they won't debate whether or not a phrase involving the word "God" is a problem. My students can't write. My students don't know how to do math. I can't believe how well educated, say, the French are compared to our kids. It's embarrassing. But I can go on THAT rant forever. After all, at my community college I GET the afterbirth of the incompetent public school system.

Preach on sista!

I think more than schools suck, parnets (not all) suck. You can't expect schools to raise kids. That's the parents job. My friend is a high school English teacher and her unit that she is allowed to pick the book, she chooses "Go Ask Alice", the story of a girl who gets into drugs and prostitution. Schmags picks this one because this is stuff that parents aren't talking to their kids about and someone needs to.

The Pledge of Allegiance debate is odd to me. They make a big deal about the "under God" thing, but nobody ever mentions the whole "pledging allegiance" thing. What if the kid doesn't really like America, but he has to live here because of his parents? They're being forced to publicly declare their love for something they don't like in the first place.

But still, you're right - how critical is this issue? Just mumble, "under Crom" like I used to. There's no need to involve the court system.

We don't have anything even similar to the Pledge of Allegiance.
I can't imagine people here pledging allegiance to Australia at school each day - that would just seem funny.
Maybe we're not as nationalistic - but it so wouldn't work!

I have to agree with Schmims, the education system in the U.S is below all criticism. Just the though of discussing the evolution theory be or not to be in schools makes my skin crawl. As for the nationalism the French are not far behind but that's a different story. But as the most powerful country in the world with the almost dumbest population no wonder that everything goes downhill. Education is power and anyone clever enough to wield its power knows how important it is with a good education. I mean over here the people argue about if the school system should be 12 or 13 years long. Another big difference is that here everybody has the chance to go to college/university because they are free, no scholarship necessary and all that crap. Almost independent of grade you can start, well if you really want to be a medic(Dr.) or something like that you need good grades but that's it!
I had a below average coming out of high school but could start an engineering program at the University directly (even if it was almost above the polar circle, Lulea Sweden) and I graduated only one year after supposed to :-)

As one of my sunday school kids said, "One Nation, Under Canada".

Who can argue with that - except maybe Alaska and Hawaii?
